Thanks to author E. F. Benson, the East Sussex town of Rye will also forever be remembered as the fictional seaside town of “Tilling”. Through Benson’s Mapp and Lucia novels Tilling takes it name from the River Tillingham which flows through Rye to join up with the River Rother on it’s way towards Rye Bay.
